They are this year's kiddie rage-brightly colored silicone bands shaped like the outlines of animals, letters, princesses, and more. Kids, and a few notable parents such as Sarah Jessica Parker, stretch them out to wear like bracelets. When taken off they revert to their original shapes. Kids also trade them, count them, and fling them, which is why they've been banned in some schools around the country. A pack of 24 costs about $5. Robert J. Croak, the 47-year-old founder of BCP, says he has sold millions.

The recession tore through Wisconsin like a cyclone, laying flat more than 150,000 jobs in two years and leveling assumptions about economic development. In the aftermath, state government needs to try new strategies to stimulate entrepreneurship and tap the state's vast reservoir of creativity. And Wisconsin's leaders could do worse than to look to Ohio for answers. Ohio voters earlier this month overwhelmingly approved a $700 million extension of the state's successful Third Frontier program, which has created nearly 10,000 jobs directly and had a hand in supporting 55,000 overall. The high-powered grant program has helped create or capitalize more than 600 companies since it was first conceived under the administration of Republican Bob Taft seven years ago and now has strong bipartisan support in the Ohio legislature and from the Democratic administration of current Gov. Ted Strickland.

Employment in Ohio's biosciences sector is on the rise across the state according to a report released today by BioOhio, a non-profit organization supported by the Thomas Edison Program of the Ohio Department of Development. Despite the nation's stagnant overall economy, total employment in Ohio's bioscience sector in 2008 was 55,465. That's a 2.8% increase between 2007 and 2008 (1,520 jobs). Since 2000, the bioscience sector in Ohio added over 8,400 jobs, a 17.9% increase.
