Ohio's focus on advanced energy and atmospheric and aerospace flight systems places the state in a unique position where research and production are creating major technological advances that will lead the future economy.
Ohio is pioneering the development of "green collar" workers, a growing number of skilled professionals who use their talents to improve the emerging advanced energy industry. A recent report released by the American Solar Energy Society, funded by the Ohio Department of Development, predicted that 174,000 Ohioans could have jobs related to advanced, renewable energy by 2030.
Ohio is also one of the few places in the world where all phases of fuel cell development take place, from research and development, to component supply, to final product manufacturing, leaving the state poised to lead the nation's fuel cell industry as a top research and manufacturing hub.
Statewide, Ohio's research institutions are conducting more than 125 fuel cell projects, totaling more than $50 million in research. Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio University and University of Akron are just some of the major universities participating in this research.
Since 2005, the following companies have announced fuel cell investments in Ohio:
- Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems announced Canton as its North American Fuel Cell headquarters
- GrafTech International moved its corporate headquarters from Wilmington, Del. to Parma
- HydroGen Corporation moved its headquarters from Pittsburgh to Cleveland
- California-based UltraCell Corp. announced its fuel cell manufacturing facility will be in Dayton
- Virginia-based Ashlawn Group established Pemery Corporation, its fuel cell operations, in Painesville
- Michigan-based ECD Ovonics established Ovonic Hydrogen Systems Akron, LLC in Akron
- Ohio is 1st in the nation in the fuel cell industry due to Governor Taft's $103 million Fuel Cell Initiative.
