East Central Ohio is diverse in the type of terrain from gentle rolling hills in the northwest to the more rugged foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the southeast. The Ohio River borders the region on the east as it makes its way from the Mississippi to the Port of Pittsburgh. Four-lane highways crisscross the region with numerous rail depots and main lines feeding the east and west coasts. Abundant water and low-cost energy makes East Central Ohio attractive for industry.

More than twenty-five training facilities, colleges and technical colleges are scattered throughout the region dedicated to workforce training and special research projects.

East Central Ohio is also known for its "Old World Settlements" with European influence from the German, English, Italian and Scandinavian countries. The Amish have many settlements and are excellent craft workers, many with their own businesses and drawing tourists from far away. Pottery is still strong in parts of East Central Ohio with many "hi-tech" facilities shipping their wares to other parts of the world. East Central Ohio is also known for their chemical, tier 2 automotive and plastics industries. Coal is predominant in the southeast portion of East Central Ohio.

Colgate-Palmolive, Detroit Diesel, AutoZone and Longaberger Baskets as well as Wal-Mart Distribution and Ohio Coatings have called East Central Ohio home because of an abundant trained workforce, low-cost energy, good transportation and quality of life.
