Northeast Ohio’s Cleveland Plus region is anchored by Cleveland with the subsidiary major metros of Akron-Canton and Youngstown. Cleveland Plus’ strength in advanced manufacturing, combined with cutting-edge research and technology sectors, maximizes the region's leadership in bioscience, polymers, aerospace and other technology-driven fields including IT.
The region’s location, coupled with its easy access to major out-of-state and international markets, make it one of the nation’s top areas for corporate and professional services. Cleveland Plus is home to 26 Fortune 1,000 headquarters including Goodyear, Lubrizol, J.M. Smucker, Eaton Corporation, Progressive Insurance, Sherwin Williams, and Parker Hannifin.
Premiere institutions such as the NASA Glenn Research Center and Wright Center for Innovation’s Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine are located in Cleveland Plus, along with several worldclass technology incubators and the University of Akron's world-class polymers programs. The region is the longtime hub of the Ohio's polymer industry due to historic ties with Goodyear Tire & Rubber in Akron.
Cleveland Plus has become a global hub for biomedical business and one of the world’s foremost research locations. Home to the Cleveland Clinic, the region’s foundation of world-renowned healthcare is creating bioscience research and commercialized technologies used globally. Cleveland Plus’ bioscience industry is growing on average by 7.4% annually, and today is home to more than 600 biomedical businesses has grown by 34% in 5 years.
30 colleges and universities are located in Cleveland Plus, developing next generation technologies and 175,000 degree-seeking innovative minds. The region contains a highly productive workforce of 2 million with a Midwestern work ethic and a fundamental ability to produce and distribute products worldwide cost-effectively.
Northeast Ohio offers a robust transportation infrastructure. Interstates 71, 76, 77, 80, and 90 run through the region. Moreover, Cleveland Plus includes Cleveland Hopkins Airport, Akron-Canton Airport and nine other satellite airports, 16 Long Distance Northeast Ohio Freight Companies, three Class 1 Northeast Ohio Railroad Carriers and the largest seaports on the Great Lakes and Ohio River. Northeast Ohio ports are also Foreign Trade Zones, providing substantial savings for international shippers.
Cleveland Plus is home to one of the "Big Five" major orchestras in the world, the Cleveland Orchestra. The Playhouse Square Center in Cleveland is the second-largest performing arts center in the country behind New York's Lincoln Center. In addition to Broadway musicals, The Cleveland Opera, Ohio Ballet and the Great Lakes Theater Festival all perform there. Cleveland Plus also has dozens of art and cultural museums throughout the region including the Akron Art Museum, the Canton Museum of Art, the Butler Art Institute and the world renowned Cleveland Museum of Art. In addition, the, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and more mean that you will always have something new to see here.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park, located between Akron and Cleveland, is the third most visited national park in the country. In the summer, the region offers Lake Erie boating and beaches, while in the winter there is plenty of local skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. Cleveland is home to three professional sports team with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians, with many other minor league teams and world class events such as the Grand Prix of Cleveland and the Bridgestone Invitational.
Recent Notable Investment Projects
- Goodyear Tire & Rubber - $900 million investment for a new global headquarters including the retention of over 3,000 jobs in downtown Akron.
- Rotek - $82 million investment, including the creation of 150 jobs for the production of blade bearings for the wind energy industry.
- ViewRay - $15 million investment, including the creation of 93 jobs for the assembly and testing of the company’s new image guided radiation therapy technology.
- Turning Technologies - $2 million investment, including the creation of 50 new jobs and the retention of 99 existing jobs at the company’s Youngstown headquarters.
- Eaton – Expansion of the company’s Cleveland headquarters, including the creation of 177 new jobs.
- J.M. Smucker - $15 million investment, including the creation of 115 new jobs and the retention of 1,400 existing jobs for the expansion of the company’s Orrville headquarters.
Northeast Ohio Quickfacts
- Cleveland Hopkins Airport (CLE) offers over 320 daily nonstop flights to more than 80 destinations.
- Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) was the second fastest growing U.S. airport from 2001-2006 according to the FAA.
- The Port of Cleveland has the best heavy lift capacity on the Great Lakes. Port facilities include nine berths and 6,500 linear feet of dock space. Docks are maintained at a full seaway depth, which is 27 feet, with excellent access to interstate highways and rail.
- In just 5 years, BioEnterprise has generated more than $500 million in new VC funding, making the Cleveland Plus region stronger in VC recruitment than many states.
- With GE, Phillips, Case Western and more, medical imaging companies are clustering in Northeast Ohio.
- For 14 years, US News and World Report has named the Cleveland Clinic the best heart hospital in America.
